Poya day today.   We close the restaurant and are relaxing.   We had Durian!  It was yummy..

This is our opening schedule in July. We are sorry but we close from 13 July to 24 July for summer holidays and 1 and 31 July for Poyaday. Tueasdays are regular holidays, too. Again sorry for causing inconvenience. We are looking forward to meeting you at Cafe Japan! ７月のカフェジャパン営業の予定です。７月は１、３１日がポーヤデーでお休みです。そして、７月１３日から２４日まで夏季休暇でお休みを頂きます。火曜日は定休日です。今月は休みが多くてご迷惑をおかけしますが、皆様のご来店を心よりお待ち申し上げます。

Sardines いわしの煮付け

How do you like to cook sardines?   We eat them by fried, boiled, simmered, and just in the raw!  Sardine Sushi is so delicious! However cooking is so difficult as Sardines have numerous bones.  Especially to eat them in the raw, we have to remove all bones...   Unbelievable....  To sell them well in Japan, we can find the sliced and cleaned bones sardines pack at the supermarket.  To make easy to eat and to get their nutritions sometimes we simmered them for a long time and eat with bones.  This is the dish which we simmered for a long time with sauce and ginger.   It is popular food and good to rice.   You may enjoyed this food at Cafe Japan sometimes.  
日本でも鰯が美味しい季節になったのではないでしょうか？スリランカでも鰯を手に入れることがあります。鰯は骨が多いので調理が面倒くさいですが、手間がかかる分、美味しいですよね。栄養も豊富ですね。カフェジャパンでは、フライにしたり煮付けたり、刺身にしたりしています。めったにお出しすることはありませんが、鰯のお寿司は絶品です。今日は、鰯の煮付けにしましたよ。私は、ご飯が止まりません。。

Sashimi & Osushi 刺身と御寿司

The most popular menu at Cafe Japan is still Sashimi and Sushi!    Luckily Sri Lanka is island and the paradise of fish!  It has become very common to have Sushi in Sri Lanka though yet some seem to be misunderstanding the differences of  Sashimi and Sushi.   Sashimi is no rice like above picture and just sliced plain fish.   Sushi has variety of styles like Rolled sushi, Nigiri sushi, Chirashi zushi, Temaki sushi, and so on and it has contained with Rice and seafoods, meat, or vegetables.    It was not common in Japan to use meat for sushi but not now. 　When we have opened Cafe Japan Restaurant in Colombo 2000, it was not so popular menu in Sri Lanka yet.   Only some customers requested them.    However, when the customers visited us at their 5 years old, now become 20 years old and they have no wall to have them at all.
カフェジャパンの人気メニューは何と言っても、刺身や寿司ですね。スリランカは島国で魚も新鮮なものが手に入りますので、大変美味しいです。開店当時は、一部の方しかお召し上がりにならなかったと思いますが、現在では、寿司、刺身は大変普通のものになってきている気がします。考えてみたら、私たちが開店当時にお会いしていた５歳のお客様は２０歳以上になられているのですからね。今は、寿司、刺身を召し上がるのに、何の壁もありません。大変うれしいですね。しかしながら、一方で今でも、刺身と寿司を混同されているお客様がいらっしゃいますよ。もちろん、説明すればすぐにお分かりになられます。

This is Rolled sushi with Delicacy tuna.  Some are using a lot of Soy sauce to have sushi though I would like to tell that Sushi has already used some salt and it may be caused high intake of salt if you sink your sushi in soy sauce.  Sashimi as well.  Hope you enjoy foods but  take care of high intake of salt!　　If you feel thirsty a lot after eating sushi, it maybe a sign of high intake of salt.
私が個人的に見ていて心配になるのは、刺身や寿司をたくさんのしょうゆに浸して召し上がるお客様がいらっしゃることです。外国の方には案外知られていないのですが、お寿司にも塩は使われます。ですので、しょうゆをつけ過ぎると塩分過多になり、のどが乾いたりします。おいしいものですが、気をつけなければなりませんね。

These days hot days continues...   How are you spending the day?
We usually close on Tuesdays and Poyaday and the Poya day was on Tuesday in June. 
When I tell my friend about Sri Lanka's Poya day which is the holiday on Full moon day every month, all my friends say it is beautiful and very good or holly day!  Yes, some liquor lovers may feel disapointment at the alchol free day though I think it is a good chance to be patient and respect the culture.  After I knew about Poya day, I have started to see the moon wherever I am in the world.   Until then, I felt busy everyday and could not afford to see the moon.
By the way, thank you so much for having our foods at home and restaurant.   Looking forward to hearing from your order this month, too!
毎日暑い日が続きます。皆様いかがお過ごしですか？
今月は、ポーヤデーが火曜日でしたので、火曜日だけのお休みとなります。
私は、友人にスリランカのポーヤデーのことを話すのですが、だいたい、「すごく素敵！」とか、
「ロマンティックだねー。」などと言われることがあります。お酒好きな方は、禁酒日なのでがっかりされますが、月に一日ぐらい禁酒の日があってもいいのかなあと思ったりします。私は、それまで月を意識してみることがなかったのですが、ポーヤデーを知ってからは（休みなので）、空を見上げて月を見る機会が増えました。昔は、毎日に追われている気がして、月を見る心の余裕もなかったのかもしれません。
さて、先月もたくさんのお客様の来店と注文ありがとうございました。来店が重なりますとお食事を出すのが遅くなることがあり、ご迷惑をおかけしていますが、お客様の優しさに感謝しております。今月もがんばります！

Japanese magazines 本棚 雑誌

There are Japanese magazines and newspapers at the restaurant.   We miss them and we could get the subscriptions even in Sri Lanka.   Now more digital tools are popular though we share with customers during meals.  Not only Japanese but Englidh magazines are here as some foreign customers leave the English magazines as well.  Some airline companies also leave their informations.   Some customers who do not read Japanese seem enjoying watching magazines and comic books.   For Japanese travelers, they seem to be at home when read the magazines and newspapers.   If you miss and get Japanese culture, enjoy!
カフェジャパンにもたくさんの日本の雑誌や新聞があります。スリランカにいながら、購読ができるんですよ！便利な世の中ですね。一般的には電子書籍が便利かもしれませんが、お客様とシェアするので、私たちはもっぱら紙です。日本人の旅行者の方達には、日本の書籍があるとホッとして頂けるようですね。また、外国人の日本語を知らないお客様も漫画や雑誌をご覧になります。本棚はずっと探していた雑誌用の本棚です。コロンボのアンティークショップで買いました。スリランカには、素敵なお店があって、時間がある時は見に行くのも楽しみの一つです。

Yummy and very popular chicken やみつきチキン

 This is a dish we prepare for a dinner course.  There are many chicken menu like Karaage - Japanese style fried chicken and Yakitori - Grilled skewered chicken.   Those are VERY popular as well though some regular customers request this chiken dish.  One of our popular chicken menu. Once it fried and well seasoned in the sauce.   The hidden spice makes the chicken more taste.  You can enjoy flavour of the sesames as well.   This picture is taken in the kitchen and we grined the sesames in the special bowl made by pottery and make a special sauce.  Soon after the chicken fried, it is soaked in the sauce.
色々なお料理がありますが、夜のコースディナーでもよく出されるお料理です。スリランカではチキンをお召し上がりになるお客様が多く、焼き鳥やから揚げはもちろん人気ですが、常連のお客様はこのようなチキン料理をリクエストされることがあります。この写真は厨房で撮った写真で、ゴマの味と隠し味のスパイスがよい風味を出しています。
