We serve Japanese tea (Green tea) and Oolong tea (a kind of Chinese tea) by ice or hot depends on the customers' requests . Japanese tea leaves are imported from Japanese tea manufacturer in order to have fresh one. Japanese tea leaves are steamed to prevent from being fermented and it keeps colour green. Japanese tea includes Vitamins like C, B2 and E. There are another minerals, too. It is said that Japanese tea is good for health and beauty. Though it is sold in the plastic bottles at the supermarket, Japanese sometimes are surprised at the taste which contains sugar. Usually we do not add sugar into Japanese tea and drink it instead of water so that we drink green tea when we have meals and sweets and when we feel thirsty. There is Matcha green tea which is often uses for traditional tea ceremonies. Of course, not only for the ceremony but you can drink it anytime whenever you like. Matcha is thick green tea and we do not add sugar and you may feel a bit bitter. It is famous for Green tea ice cream in the world and it is used for Tempura with salt, too. Oolong tea is also very popular in Japan. In my opinion, Oolong tea is easy to drink without sugar and it contains very similar minerals as Green tea and then it is popular among Japanese. We hope you enjoy Japanese or Oolong tea at Cafe Japan.
'NAGISA's story reminds me the first time when we have opened the restaurant in 2000. For a few months, there were no customers and we became customers by ourselves and trained the staffs by ordering foods. I thought the logo on the wall 'Cafe Japan' was meant the Japanese restaurant and the customer would visit us soon. However, most of customers thought the restaurant must be owned by a local person and they never thought authentic Japanese foods restaurant. One day, we have spoken to some Japanese ladies in front of Queen's Court. "We have opened Japanese restaurant 'Cafe Japan'. Please visit us when you have a chance." Then, those ladies visited us one day and it began customer visit us. And other young couple also visited Cafe Japan and she cried ' I have waited for a long time to come such a restaurant!' They liked our foods and later their colleague told us that they liked Cafe Japan and they made photocopy of your menu and introducing Cafe Japan to their friends. We were happy to hear that and it gave us a lot of cheers. Though, in those days, there were no air conditioners at Cafe Japan, a lot of customers visited us. Some foreign customers were surprised at the numbers of Japanese customers and said 'Little Japan'. Now we think we were helped and supported by a lot of foreign (includes local) and Japanese customers. Otherwise, we don't know we are still here.
Before we opened Cafe Japan in 2000, we have thought about the restaurant's name. Usually in Japanese, we are saying the 3 letters would be nice to remember and to be known among the customers and we thought about 'NAGISA'. Though our restaurant was not located along the coast, we have liked the name. We have other names, too like Dandelion, Sunflowers which are common flower names. Finally we have decided Cafe Japan after we have decided the location. It was located next to Mt.Lavinia Cafe (present) and there was a pretty antique house though there is nothing at all.
